very mention of the name Trans Siberian Railway conjures up
images of the frozen wastes of Siberia and great plains and deserts
of Central Asia, yet these unique journeys spanning the continents of
Europe and Asia are far more than a simple train trips, as you will
discover.
A multitude of 'off train' options offer you the chance to experience
first hand the authentic highlights of life, culture and scenery of
Russia, Mongolia and China. Perhaps break your journey and spend time
camping with the nomads of Mongolia in their traditional Ger Camps or
experience the hospitality at an overnight homestay with a local family
on the shores of Lake Baikal. Partake in all manner of exciting activities,
such as ice-fishing and husky dog sledding, snowmobile trips and trekking.
Then to round it all off, relax in the warmth of an inviting Siberian
sauna.
Accommodation on board the train is in comfortable 2nd class, 4-berth
uni-sex compartments. The convivial atmosphere provides plenty of opportunities
to swap stories with your fellow train passengers: disembark at the
end of your trip with a host of newly found friends! Food is local in
flavour, with a restaurant car on the international train services.
Some local trains are also used, and whilst these do not have a restaurant
car, you can stock up with goodies before you board. Specialities include
smoked salmon, or perhaps even caviar, at bargain prices. Wash this
down with champagne - a steal at a few dollars a bottle - and you have
a decadent, yet affordable, meal!
This is, in short, a journey of extremes and superlatives. Skirt Lake
Baikal, the world's largest freshwater lake; travel past The Great Wall
of China, the planet's longest man-made structure; traverse Siberia,
