Colin and I were the incredibly lucky winners of the IMAX Born To be Wild 3D/Kumuka Worlwide/Flight Centre competition to travel to Borneo to see the orang-utans first hand in their natural habitat in Indonesian Borneo.
We wanted to thank you for making this dream trip a reality. We returned from our travels a couple of weeks ago with a new passion for the jungle including a few personal encounters with some of it’s divine inhabitants. It was truly humbling sharing the same space as our primate relatives and the amazing feeling that went straight through you as they held eye contact is impossible to describe.
It was an absolute thrill to walk through Camp Leakey and to relive part of the Born To Be Wild movie! It was like a portal between the IMAX theatre and the jungle of Borneo. We felt like time stood still. We were blessed with both perfect weather for the entire trip and proactive tour guides who made daily efforts to get us the best vantage points and early starts with at the orang-utan camps before other tourists arrived.
Your staff in Indonesia provided excellent service. We would like to acknowledge Gilang Albanjari in particular who was incredibly thoughtful, attentive to our every need, knowlegable, flexible, very good humoured and knew how to make things happen in an instant. He was always courteous to us and also to every crew member looking after us on board our klotok in Borneo.
The lead guide on our klotok, Danny Hamdan, also deserves a special mention. This man’s knowledge of the jungle and everything contained within was amazing. We learnt so much. Danny also made sure that we were very early to the 3 Camps so that we had the best opportunity to get close and personal with the orang-utans. We were most appreciative of his thoughtfulness here and had some very intimate and life changing encounters with some orang-utans including Pen, Princess and Big Tom. One afternoon at camp Leakey Pen actually came onto our klotok and stole our fried bananas that we awaiting us for afternoon tea. That’s a story we’ll be dining out on for the rest of our lives!
The food on the boat was also nothing short of 5 star! We were treated like king and queen and naturally found it very hard to settle in back with our daughters at home.
