Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon was a British colony for more than a century, it gained independence in 1948 and is now a Republic with a linguistically and religiously diverse population. This tear-drop shaped island consists mostly of flat coastal plains, with mountains rising in the centre, the climate is tropical with a monsoon season. In the northeast monsoon lasts from December to March and in the southwest June to October.

» Religion in Sri Lanka is varied. Buddhism is the main religion but Hinduism, Christianity and Islam are also prominent. Traditionally Sri Lanka was the home to two main cultures, the Sinhalese and the Tamil but since British colonial rule and in more recent times, particularly in urban areas, Sri Lanka has developed under a western influence. However, Sri Lankans have not stopped practicing their culture and traditions.

» Food is undoubtedly one of the biggest highlights of any tour to Sri Lanka with a wide variety of colourful and tasty traditional dishes on offer. It is also one of the biggest tea producers in the world, so if you enjoy a nice 'cuppa' there is no better place to visit!
