SCUBA DIVING
Your departure may offer a scuba-diving program for 24 experienced
dry-suit scuba divers. The dive sites will vary from shallow ice diving,
diving along a wall, from a beach or from the zodiac. The maximum
depth is around 20 meters / 60 feet. The combination of sunlight and
the often-extraordinary formations of ice cause an overwhelming, ever-changing
spectre of colours, with a fantastic variety of shades and brilliance.
While snorkelling or diving along the ice floes, you will be amazed
and never forget these deep blue colours. In the Arctic waters we
may observe typical marine life such as sea squirts, squat lobsters,
many species of starfish, spider crabs, soft corals, anemones, peacock
worms, sea-snails, crabs, sea butterflies, various Arctic fish, shrubby
horse-tails, jelly-fish, sea-hedgehogs and even seals. We plan at
least one to two dives per day (except for days at sea), but an exact
number of dives cannot be given. It all depends on ice and weather
conditions.
Please check the departure dates for this tour to see if diving is
offered. This works on a first-come-first-serve basis, and must be
paid for when booking your Arctic Tour. Speak to your travel agent
or a Kumuka representative for further information.
SEA KAYAKING
Your departure may offer a sea kayaking program for 14 experienced
kayakers. Excursions will only take place in safe surroundings and
good weather conditions, within a safe distance from the ship, and
at all times a Zodiac will be on standby. Passengers are required
to have sufficient physical fitness and basic sea kayak experience.
The kayaks are single seat kayaks and double seat kayaks (Perception
Horizon II and Perception Sea Yak).
Kayaking in polar areas involves some potential risks, especially
that of very cold water and hypothermia. These trips are by no means
a suitable place for a first time kayaker. Be sure to have enough
kayak experience before you take part in these excursions. Basic skills
should include normal handling of a sea kayak in moderate sea conditions.
It is not necessary to be able to do kayak rolls, just to be comfortable
in a sea kayak.
